To unite a diverse coalition of partners to leverage shared expertise and resources, transforming energy systems in the global South for a more equitable and sustainable future.
It was formally launched at COP 26 in 2021 and set up by the Ikea Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund. RF Catalytic Capital incubated GEA following its launch and provided operational and legal support to help with its expected spin off. Today, GEA is its own 501(c) 3, headquartered in the US.
Its geographic focus is currently in Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Vietnam, where it has teams that can track progress and scale solutions and lessons learned to a broader network of more than 80 countries.
A close relationship with countries and in-country capacity development, coupled with flexible and catalytic capital, has enabled GEA to deploy close to US$500 million in investments, mitigate 147,00 tons of CO2 emissions, increase energy access to 1.29 million people and businesses, and support more than 600,000 jobs.
During its incubation at RFCC, GEA mobilized US$1 billion and targets mobilizing US$6.2 billion to unlock even greater access to green energy.
