Bretton Woods Initiative at 80
Bretton Woods Initiative at 80 (BWI at 80) is convening the collective knowledge of world experts to develop a future economic strategy that financially empowers the global South.
In July 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) tasked a Group of Advisors with developing a 20 to 30-year view on the future of the world economy, international cooperation, and the roles of the Bank and the Fund. It was launched to take stock of these two Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs) as they mark their 80th anniversary and is referred to as the BWI at 80 Initiative. The Group of Advisors will chair a series of conversations over a year-long period with a wide range of stakeholders to inform their expert view.
RFCC provides critical initial support for the Initiative, including the hosting of staff and core infrastructure support to realize the initiative’s strategic objectives. A key component of this work includes several global consultation meetings which bring together diverse perspectives, including voices that are at times left out of crucial feedback processes like this. Through these consultations, BWI at 80 will co-create a vision for the role of the BWIs in a more equitable international financial architecture of the future.
Informed by input gathered from stakeholder consultation meetings, BWI at 80 will develop a report to inform a reimagined vision for the BWIs, with a focus on rectifying existing power imbalances in the current system. The first report is due to be presented at the 2025 World Bank Spring Meetings.
